The inaugural gamesindustry.biz Indie Publishing Awards took place this month, celebrating the business side of the indie games industry and featuring a host of indie stand outs; including a Special Recognition Award to Wings Interactive for work to support diverse teams through investment, opportunity & the GDC Relief Fund.

The awards show was supported by a number of big names in indie games, including Valve’s Gabe Newell, PlayStation’s Shuhei Yoshida, Romero Games’ Brenda Romero, Minecraft’s Helen Chiang, Xbox/Sega/EA veteran Peter Moore, OtherSide Entertainment’s Warren Spector, and Rami Ismail.

The final award of the night was the special recognition award, which was proudly accepted by Wings Interactive. The award called special attention to their positive impact on indie games through ongoing investment in diverse teams, the GDC relief fund where they helped indie developers affected by COVID cancellations, and the Elevate online development incubator. The show also premiered a fantastic video featuring game developers that have been directly impacted by their WINGS experience including Resistance Studio, Cave Monsters, Selva Interactive, Persona Theory, The Moon Pirates, Anomaly Games and Bloom Digital.

“..investing in diverse teams translates into innovative games and ideas. Supporting women led and gender diverse teams today, will have a positive impact in the future of our industry,” explained Alhvi Balcárcel of Selva Interactive. “They deserve this award because this sets an example for other companies, publishers and investors, as many talented teams around the world usually do not have the opportunities to get their projects funded and supported.”

“They gave people like us the voices and the platform to actually tell our stories,” vouched Saqina Latif of Persona Theory games.

“We believe in diversity and inclusion and we are excited to make real change in the industry,” said Corina Diaz from WINGS during the acceptance speech. “This year we continue with bringing Elevate back for 2021, and investing in a whole array of game development projects.”
